With a majority vote, Mexicali City Hall declared January 17 as the “Day of Inclusion and Respect for Sexual and Gender Diversity Rights,” marking a significant step toward social justice in the capital of Baja California.
Mayor Norma Bustamante of Mexicali highlighted the historical importance of the decision, stating that it represents “another step toward visibility and access to human rights for the LGBTQIA+ community.”

The date was selected to mark the 10th anniversary of Víctor Aguirre and Fernando Urías becoming the first same-sex couple to legally formalize their union in the municipality.
Following the approval of the initiative, Mayor Norma Bustamante of Mexicali met with representatives of the LGBTQIA+ community, reaffirming her commitment to defending their rights.
