In Mexicali, help is coming straight to people’s doorsteps. As part of a new initiative, Mayor Norma Bustamante’s team recently delivered mobility devices to young residents with disabilities, making it easier for families who might struggle to travel or cover costs.
Karla Edith González Navarro, head of the city’s support services, oversaw the home visits. During one round, a 9-year-old girl and a 20-year-old woman each received a new wheelchair, giving them more independence in their daily lives. Both will also start receiving monthly food baskets and be enrolled in a city scholarship program for people with disabilities.

This year alone, 13 mobility aids—including wheelchairs, crutches, canes, and walkers—have been delivered. Last year, the city handed out 243 devices, plus more than 10,000 pairs of reading glasses.
City officials say the goal is simple: reach people where they are and make sure everyone has the tools they need to live more comfortably and independently.
