In a sweeping push to protect public health and the environment, Mexicali’s Ecological Unit, part of the Public Security Department (DSPM), has issued 990 environmental fines in the first eight months of 2025, a 300% jump compared to the same period last year.

The crackdown is part of Mayor Norma Bustamante’s “Zero Tolerance” policy, which targets illegal dumping, blocked public pathways, and noise pollution.

Overall, the city recorded 7,465 infractions from January to August, a 31% increase from the 5,672 tickets issued in 2024. Among the most notable jumps: noise violations rose 10%, obstructions to public transit climbed 20%, and failure-to-clean fines spiked by more than 80%.

City Hall stressed that enforcement alone isn’t enough, urging residents to take part in the effort to keep streets and neighborhoods safe, clean, and livable.
