In a move to foster inclusive sports, Mayor Norma Bustamante of Mexicali has delivered new sports equipment to programs serving neurodivergent residents and awarded financial grants to local athletes competing on the world stage.

The initiative, carried out through the municipal “Changing Habits” program by the Municipal Institute of Sports and Physical Culture (IMDECUF), provided equipment to 15 Multiple Care Centers (CAM) and physical activation groups across the city.

“Today, we’re delivering sports equipment to our neurodivergent community, recognizing that exercise is a powerful tool for improving concentration, self-regulation, and coordination, while also reducing stress, anxiety, and sensory overload,” the mayor said.

The mayor also presented financial awards to three local athletes to help fund their competitive ambitions. The recipients are:

  • Juan de Dios Martínez Granados, who will represent Mexico at the 5th Deaflympic Games in Tokyo (November 15-26, 2025).
  • Francisco Postlethwaite Muñoz, who is set to compete in Ironman 2025 in California, USA.
  • Freddy Guerrero, a deaf-mute long-distance runner.

Valerio Camargo, Director of IMDECUF, explained that each of the 15 equipment packages distributed includes a soccer ball, two latex balls, basketballs, Mikasa game balls, five hula hoops, and a kit of tennis balls and training cones.
