MEXICO.- Once again, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has released statistics on the employment situation of its 34 members. This year, Mexico has been crowned as the country whose employees work the most amount of hours a year.
According to the report, Mexican employees work an average of 2237 per year, which would break down to more than ten hours a day and comprises of a paid hour, non-paid hour, and at home work. The OECD indicated that their concern is that such long work days don't necessarily equate to greater job security for the worker.
The study revealed that 60% of the working population in Mexico is categorized in the informal sector. This year, the country had a slow growth rate reaching 1.3%. The female population also faces a horrible statistic: 40% of female women don't work or study.
The OECD indicated the urgency of improving work conditions in the country and applauded initiatives to increase the minimum wage. He added that it is urgent that workers receive not only social security benefits but also that they work in a good work environment. Currently, the majority of Mexicans have more than one job and work at a very low pay rate.
After Mexico, on the list of most-hardworking employees, was South Korea with 2163 hours a year, Greece at 2037 hours a year, Chile with 2015 hours a year, and Russia with 1980 hours a year. The United States came in at 1788 hours a year.
