MEXICO. – Mexico won the Under-20 Championship by defeating the U.S. 3-1 in overtime, and El Salvador took third place by beating Cuba 1-0 in the finals yesterday in the city of Puebla.

The match between Mexico and the U.S. went into overtime after the regular game time ran out with a tie score from goals by Jesus Corona (Mexico) at minute 3 and from Benjamin Joya (U.S.) after a penalty at minute 10.

Mexico in overtime secured the victory when Julio Enrique Gomez scored a penalty shot at minute 98, and also by Julio Espericueta at the 112 minute in the game that was held in front of 40,000 spectators at the Cuauhtémoc stadium in Puebla.

In the match between Cuba and El Salvador, Yordan Santacruz got ejected from the became because of a red car just before the break at minute 44, and left Cuba with only ten men on the field to play the entire second half. El Salvador took advantage of this and was able to take third place by beating Cuba 1-0 on a goal by Roberto Gonzalez that was scored just a minute before the final whistle.

The U.S. finished in second place in the Under-20 Championships and qualified for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup that will be held in Turkey.
