MEXICO CITY. The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk (Cofepris), one of the biggest obstacles in Mexico for the consumption of certain substances, has now greenlit the production and importing of marijuana based medicinal products in the country.
Secretary of Health, José Narro Robles, said that he is only waiting for the matter to be solved in Congress, referring to the reform known as MarihuanaMX proposed by Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto, so that he can set the operative guidelines for national and international labs to start producing medical drugs with cannabis sativa components. Pharmaceutical companies from the U.S., Europe, Canada and Australia could then request a legal permit to sell their products in Mexico.
Narro Robles, who is also the National Autonomous University of Mexicos former rector, stated that there is no place to discuss the legalization of poppy seed-based opiates while marijuana is still a hot button issue.
