Mexico is taking concrete steps to resolve the longstanding wastewater crisis affecting the Pacific coastline shared by Tijuana and San Diego, according to the Consulate General of Mexico in San Diego.
Among the key actions are the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in July 2025, as well as the recent adoption of Minute 333 by the International Boundary and Water Commission.
In addition, Mexican authorities are developing a long-term financial framework to ensure the operation and maintenance of infrastructure designed to permanently halt the flow of untreated wastewater. The initiative aims to protect public health and the environment on both sides of the border. With these efforts, Mexico reaffirms its commitment to working alongside the United States to find coordinated solutions to the shared challenge.
