DALLAS – In spite of their problems and complications Mexico is in the semifinals round where it will get a chance at revenge against Panama, the team that beat the Mexicans in the opening game if this Gold Cup with a score of 2-1.
Mexico has been improving game by game, but at such a slow pace that it has been somewhat unnoticeable. But they are the favorites to reach the final over the Panamanians in spite of it all.
Jose Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre in theory has had a good tournament, but the style of play has still left a lot to be desire of. Mexico started off the tournament with a bad 2-1 loss to Panama and has since struggled to beat Canada and Martinique as well as Trinidad & Tobago in the quarterfinals.
Panama has been a bipolar team, giving their best performance against Mexico in that opening match, they then struggled to beat Martinique by 1-0 and drew the last group stage game against Canada. They once again turned in a spectacular performance in quarterfinals beating Cuba 6-1.
Te biggest threat for Panama will come from Gabriel Torres who has shinned with the "Hat-Trick"'he scored against Cuba.
Due to their big history Mexico is still the favorites t advance to the finals. But in reality no one can tell who will win, it is not clear how motivated the Panamanians will be, or if Mexico will have the "big team's luck".
The match is scheduled for Wednesday July 24 at 9:00PM local time (7:00PM pacific) from the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
Possible lineups:
México: Jonathan Orozco; Miguel Layún, Joel Huiqui, Juan C. Valenzuela, Adrián Aldrete; Marco Fabián, Carlos Peña, Alejandro Castro, Luis Montes; Rafael Márquez Lugo y Raúl Jiménez.
