MEXICO.- Mexican Government announced today that the Fine Arts Medal, which is one of the most important and distinguished cultural medals in the country, will be awarded to the Columbian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who has lived in Mexico since the 60's.
"To celebrate the occasion of the 3oth anniversary of the Nobel Prize in Literature given to Gabriel Garcia Marquez (1982), we will be awarding the author and journalist with the Fine Arts Medal", informed the National Institute of Fine Arts (Conaculta) in a message.
The announcement was made today by the president of Conaculta, Consuelo Saizar who also mentioned about the second edition of Encuentro Nuevos Cronistas de Indias, that will take place from the 10th to 12th of October.
The Fine Arts Medal is the highest distinguished award that is given by the Mexican National Institute of Fine Arts to prominent figures of the world in theatre, dance, visual arts, music and literature.
It is awarded to individuals who have had a brilliant career and transcended in the artistic and cultural life of Mexico.
The most recent recipient of this medal was the Argentinian poet Juan Gelman (Buenos Aires, 1930), who received it this past weekend for his "talent and tenacity" that is expressed throughout all his work.
Recipients of this award in the past have also been the Mexican architect Teodoro Gonzalez de Leon and cellist Carlos Prieto amongst others.
A date has not been set yet for the ceremony, in which the medal will be given to Garcia Marquez.
