MEXICO- Amnesty International (A.I.) today criticized the Mexican government that is headed by Enrique Peña Nieto, for its lack of attention to the abuse cases towards migrants that are happening around the country and that are also on the rise, according to this non-governmental organization.
"The number of 'illegal migrants' passing through Mexico increased during 2012, and routine kidnappings, sexual violence, forced recruitment into groups of organized crime, human trafficking and the murder of migrants continues to be out of control," said Daniel Zapico in a press conference that was held at the Museum of Memory and Tolerance in Mexico City.
Without providing figures to prove this trend, but claiming he has collected evidence from staff working in shelters and other shelters scattered throughout Mexico, A.I. called for a greater commitment from the state government to address the issue.
"Enrique Peña Nieto has so far not taken any steps to correct the previous government's complete failure to address this humanitarian crisis," said Zapico, whom also in a partially positive aspect saw the "new immigration law" as an improvement, but was still not being implemented in benefit to migrants.
"Once again the fate of migrants in Mexico appears to be a secondary issue for the authorities," added Zapico.
"Migrants are still invisible to the Mexican authorities despite legislative changes," said Zapico, who predicted that "the humanitarian crisis that Mexico is suffering will get worse in the coming months."
Speaking at the press conference also was the coordinator of the organization SMR-Scalambrinas: Mission for Migrants and Refugees, Leticia Gutierrez, who regretted that this is "a country where nothing happens" in regards to migration issues.
"We do not pay attention to the tragedies suffered by migrants," said Gutierrez who also believes that the situation has worsened.
