With summer in full swing and new housing developments and buildings expanding across Tijuana, local wildlife is being forced to flee their natural habitats. This situation has led to an uptick in snake sightings, sparking concern among residents.
Snakes Spotted in Tijuana
Recent snake encounters have been shared on social media, including two sightings in Playas de Tijuana and one in the Presidentes neighborhood.
The first incident reportedly took place on Monday, June 30, when residents called for help after spotting a snake. Firefighters from Station 10 responded, but the reptile managed to escape through the pipes of an unoccupied apartment building.

The second sighting was also shared online and showed a snake apparently slithering along power lines in Playas de Tijuana. However, Tijuana’s fire department could not confirm this report, so it’s unclear whether the snake was captured or if it moved away on its own. Social media users believe it was a different species from the one found in the apartments.

Meanwhile, in the Presidentes neighborhood, another snake (reportedly a rat snake) was spotted. There is no official update on whether firefighters responded or if the snake is still loose in the area.

Officials warn that as temperatures rise, snakes and other wildlife become more active, which means more frequent encounters in urban areas. Residents are advised to report any sightings by calling 911 and to avoid approaching or handling snakes, for the safety of both people and the animals.
The Municipal Civil Protection Directorate also shared the following recommendations in case you come across a snake:
- Be aware of your surroundings, given that snakes, like rattlesnakes, are usually active during the late afternoon and night.
- Keep pets on a leash when outdoors. Dogs, with their noses constantly to the ground, are at greater risk of encountering a snake.
- If you spot a snake, keep your distance, don’t lose sight of it, and back away slowly.
- If bitten, do not attempt to treat the wound yourself. Stay calm and get to the nearest medical center as quickly as possible.
