A new “Sendero Seguro” (Safe Path) has been inaugurated in Tijuana’s Morelos Park and surrounding university district, a project designed to improve public safety, mobility, and urban space for approximately 13,000 residents.
The initiative is part of a broader national strategy championed by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, now being implemented locally to create safer, well-lit, and more accessible public environments. Tijuana Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz oversaw the installation, emphasizing the project’s role in strengthening community infrastructure, which translates to safer, more functional neighborhoods.

Located along a 2.1-kilometer stretch of Avenida Insurgentes—between Bernardo O’Higgins Boulevard and Paseo del Parque—the newly consolidated corridor features significant lighting upgrades. According to Virginia Vargas González, Secretary of Territorial and Urban Development, the project involved an investment of 10.4 million pesos.
The upgrade includes the installation of 217 new light fixtures: 26 solar-powered LED units and 191 Apollo Forlighting model lamps. The enhanced illumination will dramatically improve visibility and security, encouraging greater use of the park and pathways both day and night.

Primary beneficiaries include frequent users of Morelos Park, along with students, faculty, and staff from several local institutions, including José Vasconcelos University, CUT University, Unifront University, and Ensenada College. The improved route also serves the many residents who commute through this key transit area daily.
The Tijuana City Hall reaffirms its ongoing dedication to urban infrastructure projects that prioritize citizen safety, pedestrian mobility, and overall quality of life for Tijuana’s community.
