University of California San Diego recently inaugurated the Brian & Nancy Malk Sunset Overlook, a new viewpoint offering direct views of the Pacific Ocean, located alongside La Jolla Shores Drive. The space features an observation platform, benches, trails, and accessible parking, all designed to allow people of all ages and abilities to enjoy sunsets over La Jolla’s shoreline.

The Overlook: A Space Designed for the Community

As reported by UC San Diego’s official news outlet, the project was inspired by Brian and Nancy Malk, residents of La Jolla Shores, who for years noticed people stopping on the sidewalk or in their cars to watch the sunset from this spot. Moved by this daily scene, Brian Malk proposed creating a safe, comfortable, and open space for everyone.

UC San Diego enthusiastically embraced the idea. After a planning, design, and construction process, the overlook was completed this month and is now open to the public.

A Gift to the Campus and the City

UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla thanked the Malk family for their philanthropic donation and emphasized the project’s significance. He noted that UC San Diego is a treasured destination for many reasons—research, education, healthcare, the arts—but also for its natural beauty. This new space will allow students, visitors, and residents to safely enjoy one of the most iconic views that embody the university’s spirit.

Respect for the Environment and Its Roots

The area surrounding the overlook was landscaped with native, drought-resistant plants, aligning with the university’s sustainability efforts. Additionally, signage was installed acknowledging the cultural and spiritual significance of the land, noting that the campus sits on the unceded territory of the Kumeyaay Nation.

The overlook not only frames the beauty of the ocean but also represents a vision of inclusion, community, and respect for the land. Quoting Nelson Mandela, Brian Malk concluded: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
