This Wednesday, officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to inaugurate the new Siempre Viva Bridge in Otay Mesa. The project is part of the State Route 11/Otay Mesa East Port of Entry initiative, aimed at improving mobility and safety along the San Diego–Tijuana border.
A Step Toward Shorter Wait Times
The event also marked the opening of an additional one-mile segment of SR-11, designed to ease congestion at border crossings, reduce wait times, and strengthen regional security.
Representatives from SANDAG and Caltrans, joined by state and federal partners from both the United States and Mexico, emphasized that the project is a binational milestone in building modern infrastructure to meet the needs of residents, travelers, and freight operators on both sides of the border.

Investment in Otay for the Future of the Border
The Siempre Viva Bridge and the SR-11 extension are part of a larger investment to establish a new land port of entry in Otay Mesa. The plan includes a four-lane toll road that will connect directly to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspection facility, as well as a California Highway Patrol inspection station.
With this progress, the San Diego–Baja California border region is expected to benefit from faster, more predictable, and safer crossings, while also promoting economic growth and international competitiveness.
