In a coordinated effort to enhance public safety, state and federal authorities destroyed more than 1,700 firearms in Baja California, reinforcing a key strategy in the ongoing pursuit of peace.
Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda oversaw the destruction of the weapons in an operation that underscores the collaboration between institutions to remove dangerous items from communities. The initiative aligns with the broader security vision promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
“We recognize the effort of the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) in this crucial task. Their work is fundamental to reducing risks, strengthening our communities, and protecting the lives of the families of Baja California,” the governor said.

Battalion Commander of the 28th Infantry Battalion José Guadalupe Gómez Salado emphasized the significance of the operation, noting that each weapon neutralized represents a direct threat eliminated.
“Each one of these weapons has ceased to be a danger thanks to the dedicated, coordinated work of those who protect our nation every day,” he said. “Security is a fundamental pillar for the development of any society.”

According to SEDENA, the total of 1,762 seized weapons includes 500 long guns and 1,262 handguns.
The confiscated weapons are the product of professional police work involving intelligence, investigation, and prevention. The vital role of public trust was also highlighted, noting that weapons surrendered voluntarily are a testament to that confidence.

“When citizens actively participate and place their trust in institutions, we create the conditions necessary to effectively confront the challenges facing our communities,” the commander added.
The destruction of the weapons marks a tangible step in the state government’s commitment to building a safer environment and advancing the construction of peace in Baja California.
