TOLUCA –Tijuana’s soccer team narrowly escaped defeat against the Diablos Rojos, when José Sand scored a goal in extra time, tying the game 1-1 Sunday.

A goal by Ivan Alonso had put Toluca ahead at minute 67. And that’s where the game stood until Sand, who entered the game in the second half, sent a header into the net at minute 93.

As has been the case in most of the Apertura tournament, the Xoloitzcuintles dominated play most of the game but could not manage nail down a win.

The tie will increase the pressure on Tijuana’s coach, Joaquin del Olmo, to make adjustments necessary to rack up some badly needed points.

On Sunday, it appeared that those adjustments did not include Joe Corona. The Sweetwater High alum, fresh from participating in Mexico’s U-22 national team, did not play.

Sunday’s tie gives Tijuana six points, which puts the team practically at the bottom of the standings after eight weeks of play, facing relegation back to the second circuit unless the Xolos can turn things around quickly.
