Authorities in Playas de Rosarito have shared new details about the fire that destroyed La Estancia, a well-known restaurant located on Francisco Villa Street in the Obrera neighborhood near downtown.

Officials said the emergency call came in at 9:49 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8, with fire crews arriving just four minutes later. Because of the size and intensity of the blaze, firefighters remained at the scene for several hours, wrapping up operations around 4:40 a.m. Monday.

Firefighters battle overnight blaze

Twenty-nine firefighters responded to the fire under the command of Captain Carlos Becerra. Crews worked with the M-2 unit and were assisted by water tankers from the fire department, municipal services, and private providers. After hours of continuous work, the fire was finally brought under control.

Restaurant reduced to rubble

The fire caused a total loss at the restaurant, which spanned roughly 400 square meters. Officials said the building’s largely wooden structure allowed the flames to spread quickly. About 90,000 liters of water were used to extinguish the fire.

During the response, firefighters spoke with a family member of the owner. Víctor, 56, the owner’s brother, stayed behind to watch over the property once crews had finished their work.

Authorities have not yet said what caused the fire.
