BAJA CALIFORNIA.- With the purpose of analyzing the negative effects created by human beings, as well as their impact on environmental damage, the Pacific Coast Environmental Conservancy Organization (PCEC), conducted a six week research on the Pacific Ocean´s coastline that impacts Baja California.

President of the PCEC, Jesus A. Reyes, said the since July 1st, a group of four investigators from Washington, California and Chihuahua, went to work along the path of the waste spot that accumulates on this aquatic environment.

He explained that this spot comes from the part of the ocean where garbage piles up, and where there are also chemical residues, which is why fish samples from these areas will be collected.

Regarding the matter he said that this investigation will provide information about the havoc caused to fishes, on their stress, reproduction, and development functions,

as well as the way chemical products harm their endocrine system.

Furthermore, he exemplified that the quantity of accumulated plastic residues on the garbage spot, would be enough to cover an area twice as big as the state of Texas.

"With more than 50% of human population living near water, the role humans as play regarding the improvement of our environment´s quality is fundamental, if our marine ecosystem suffers, human health suffers too", he mentioned.

He clarified that although pollution is also created naturally, humans create an even bigger impact, which is why the focus of this organization is in the investigation of the effects that contaminants derived from human activities have in the environment.

Baja California and Baja California Sur have had a significant demographic growth since 2000; studies have shown how big human populations have a direct impact in health, not just on people, but on animals and plants as well.

This phenomenon creates an increase in the use of products that once they turn into waste, they end up on the ocean, "that is why our studies try to comprehend the severity of these impacts and in that manner not only educate the public about this damage, but also alert the community that consumes fish and other aquatic organisms, of who these may be contaminated".
