TIJUANA – An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 struck the Gulf of California on Tuesday morning.

The quake at 10:54 a.m. hit about 50 miles southeast of Los Mochis, in the state of Sinaloa, and about 680 miles southeast of Tijuana, according to Mexico's National Seismological Service.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake struck at a shallow depth of 6.3 miles off the Baja California Peninsula.

There were reports of light to moderate shaking at La Paz, in Baja California Sur, and Los Mochis. There were no reports of damage and Mexican authorities did not issue a tsunami warning.

There’s has been increase earthquake activity in the California-Mexico region since the spring of 2010, when a 7.2 earthquake struck the Mexicali valley.
