Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has thrown her support behind former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s recent appeal for Mexicans to donate to Cuba, reaffirming her administration’s commitment to aiding the island nation amid its ongoing crisis.

Speaking during a visit to Nayarit, Sheinbaum addressed López Obrador’s return to the public eye on social media platform X, where he shared a bank account number and urged Mexicans to contribute whatever they could to help the Cuban people.

“He called yesterday for the solidarity of the Mexican people to support the people of Cuba. There is a special account available for anyone who wishes to contribute,” she said.

The former president’s intervention comes as Cuba continues to grapple with severe shortages caused by decades of U.S. economic sanctions, which have restricted the flow of essential goods and supplies to the island.

Sheinbaum characterized Cuba as a “sister nation” and emphasized that Mexico would maintain its humanitarian assistance despite current challenges, including complications surrounding oil imports.
