The new border crossing between Tijuana and San Diego named “Otay II” is progressing increasingly. It is carried out in cooperation between Mexican and American agencies and it will consist of a toll booth that should begin operations by 2024.

According to the border crossing’s webpage, the border region between the United States and Mexico is growing more and more which is why commercial movement between people, goods, and services needs to improve so that the local, state, federal, and international economy can be bolstered. This is why this port of entry is looking to make labor growth easier and create better opportunities in both sides of the border.

This will be the fourth port of entry between Tijuana and San Diego. This will be a toll border crossing with 10 interchangeable lanes (depending on traffic) with 5 lanes intended for cargo transportation and 5 lanes for light vehicles.

Keep San Diego Moving

The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), one of the collaborators in the creation of this border crossing, has shared that this project will bring great benefits to society such as:
  • An electronic binational toll

    • Perfect access to highways

      • A more resistant border and much more

Recently Mexico’s ambassador in San Diego, Carlos González, had a chance to speak with the Secretary of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard, about this border crossing's progress.

Currently, SANDAG and Caltrans District 11 are working on this port of entry which is why they have launched a call for design and construction services. They are looking for a high quality, committed team with a track record in design and construction for the new port of entry in Otay, a commercial vehicles compliance center, and an intelligent transportation system.
