Rosarito Mayor Leads Celebration of Local Heritage and Indigenous Languages

The mayor highlighted the importance of mother tongues in shaping cultural heritage.

Playas de Rosarito marked the International Mother Language Day with a vibrant celebration led by Mayor Rocío Adame, who highlighted the city’s ongoing commitment to preserving indigenous and Afro-Mexican languages and honoring the region’s cultural diversity.

“Today is about remembering where we come from and defending our roots,” the mayor said. “Every language carries the history of a people. Let this celebration be a seed for all of us to value and respect our mother tongues. Long live the indigenous and Afro-Mexican communities.”

The event featured a Kumiai blessing ceremony, poetry in Nahuatl, and the traditional Danza de los Viejitos performed by students from Primaria Bilingüe Sentimiento Purépecha. Teachers and participants were also recognized for their contributions to the cultural program.

Gustavo Fidel Ortiz, head of the city’s Indigenous Affairs Commission, praised the mayor for giving the celebration an institutional platform. He emphasized that mother languages are living roots of identity, and that children should grow up speaking their native tongues without fear of discrimination.

Officials from the city’s office for Indigenous and Afro-Mexican communities stressed that each word spoken in a mother tongue is an act of dignity and resistance, underscoring the importance of ongoing efforts to preserve and promote these languages. The secretary of social welfare added that speaking and teaching these languages is an act of love for the communities’ roots and shared identity.
