For the first time, the national “Tendidos de Libros” (Book Spreads) program, run by the Economic Culture Fund (FCE), has arrived in Playas de Rosarito, offering residents unprecedented access to affordable literature and cultural activities.

The event, inaugurated by Mayor Rocío Adame, transformed a public space into a vibrant literary hub. Families, young readers, and book lovers browsed through extensive collections of children’s and youth literature, classic works, contemporary titles, and scientific volumes, all priced for accessibility.

This ceremony also featured cultural programming designed to engage citizens. A highlight was a talk by Angélica Valdez, the creator of “Lectora Desobediente,” a noted booktuber and author. In her session, “Tips for Writing Without Being a Writer,” Valdez encouraged attendees to find their voice through introspection, everyday observation, and creative freedom.

This initiative represents a powerful collaboration between federal, state, and local authorities, all united in a mission to bring culture directly to the community.

“Thank you everyone for being here, your home. This is about making connections and stories, like the ones born every time we open a book. On this cold afternoon, I invite you to take a book and enjoy it with a coffee at home or share it with your friends and family. Reading transforms, opens horizons, and strengthens the social fabric. Today we reaffirm our commitment to culture and to the right of everyone to access it,” the mayor stated during the opening ceremony.

The event underscored a broader commitment from Baja California to promote literacy. Alma Delia Ábrego Ceballos, State Minister of Culture, emphasized the goal of bringing books to underserved areas.

She highlighted initiatives like  “Pasaporte Lector” (Reader’s Passport), which aim to show that reading is fun and a journey that opens doors to knowledge and imagination. She also noted that, before the end of this administration, every mejor city in the state will have its own book fair to strengthen cultural access across the region.

Paco Ignacio Taibo II, head of FCE, celebrated Rosarito’s inclusion in the national program.

“These are times of profound change. Our goal is to bring ‘Tendidos de Libros’ to places where reading rates are low,” he said.

Taibo revealed that 12,000 books have been allocated for this edition, serving the communities of Rosarito, Ensenada, and Tecate.

“We want to create more thoughtful and critical citizens; citizens who find in reading a tool to understand and transform their reality,” he said.

Following the speeches, officials toured the book displays, interacting with families and children eagerly exploring the shelves.

“We want a Playas de Rosarito that reads, imagines, and grows. Thanks to support from the Economic Culture Fund and the State Government, today we are bringing culture directly and accessibly to our people,” she stated.

With this event, the 10th City Hall of Playas de Rosarito reaffirms its commitment to cultural promotion, universal access to reading, and the creation of spaces that strengthen well-being, reflection, and community participation.
