Drivers in San Diego could face fines up to $13,500 and license suspensions if caught driving under the influence, as authorities step up efforts to keep roads safe.
The San Diego Police Department’s Traffic Division will operate a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint on Saturday, February 21, from approximately 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. The exact location is not being publicly disclosed.

Checkpoint sites are usually chosen based on past accidents and DUI arrests, with officers stopping drivers to ensure they are not impaired by alcohol or drugs. Police remind the public that driving under the influence isn’t limited to alcohol — some prescription or over-the-counter medications can also affect driving ability.

Even legal substances like recreational or medical marijuana can make it illegal to drive under the influence. Officers urge anyone planning to drink or take medications that could impair their driving to arrange a safe ride or stay home.

The checkpoint is part of a broader effort to reduce accidents, enforce public safety, and discourage impaired driving throughout San Diego.
