Free Ride Day, set for Wednesday, October 1st, eliminates fares for all MTS buses and trolleys, as well as the NCTD COASTER, SPRINTER and BREEZE, and NCTD+ on-demand services. This marks a continued effort to boost public transportation usage and provide residents an opportunity to experience San Diego’s transit network without cost.

The event aligns with California Clean Air Day, highlighting the environmental benefits of public transportation.

“As ridership on MTS continues to grow year-over-year, Free Ride Day is the perfect chance for residents to shake up their routines to give transit a try,” said Stephen Whitburn, MTS Board Chair and San Diego City Councilmember.

Since its inception in 2018, Free Ride Day has consistently driven significant ridership increases. Historical data shows passenger numbers spiking up to 30% above normal weekdays during the event. The 2024 event proved particularly successful, with over 340,000 trips taken across the county, a 7.9% increase for MTS and a substantial 22% rise for NCTD compared to 2023 figures.
