The doors to the Denny Sanford Elephant Valley at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park have opened after three and a half years of construction, unveiling a new space designed to give visitors a unique look at one of the park’s most iconic species.

The new habitat, which will be home to a herd of eight elephants, features innovative elements designed to replicate the African savanna throughout the year.

Officials at the Safari Park say Elephant Valley was created as a place where the community and elephants can connect in a meaningful way. The exhibit will also give scientists the opportunity to study these intelligent animals in an environment designed to mirror the sights, sounds and scents of African grasslands.

According to the park, the creation of Denny Sanford Elephant Valley was made possible through the support of more than 5,200 donors. With the opening of the habitat, visitors will be able to see each member of the herd up close.
“Enjoy a front-row seat as the elephants roam across the expansive savanna landscape and experience what it feels like to become part of the herd,” the park says on its website.
The same herd drew attention in April 2025 after displaying a remarkable protective behavior during a regional earthquake. According to the park, the elephants quickly and instinctively formed a circle around the youngest members of the group to shield them from potential danger.
