The most anticipated sunset tours in San Diego are back. Starting September 20, Birch Aquarium will once again open the historic Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier, normally closed to the public, for its celebrated Sunset Scripps Pier Walks.

Each 90-minute guided tour, open to ages nine and up, offers a rare chance to enjoy one of the city’s most striking views while exploring the science of the sea.

A Sunset Experience with a Scientific Twist

Far more than a scenic stroll, the walk immerses participants in marine research. Guests will collect plankton samples for microscopic study, learn about shark biology, and even dissect squid, all framed by the golden glow of the sun setting over the Pacific.

“Very few people get a chance to see the behind the scenes of the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier. Not only will you get a chance to see how the pier operates, but also a chance to see how the pier supports so many research projects that focus on the sea, land and sky,” Matthew Arrollado, Public Programs Coordinator, said.

A key highlight of this year is the inclusion of the pioneering Scripps CO2 Program. Guests will learn how scientists measure the impact of carbon dioxide in the ocean and the profound implications these findings have for California and the global climate.

What to Know Before You Go

The tour covers the full length of the pier, so participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and bring layered clothing for changing coastal conditions. All groups meet at the pier entrance; transportation is not provided.

Tickets are now available and tend to sell out quickly. Prices are set at $30 for Birch Aquarium members, $35 for a tour-and-aquarium package, and $40 for the general public.

Tour times shift with the sunset, so advance booking is essential.
