Long-awaited adjustments to vehicle lanes at the San Ysidro Port of Entry could be implemented before the end of the year, according to Tijuana Mayor Ismael Burgueño. The proposed changes, aimed at reducing border wait times, are in their final stages of review and could be formalized within days.
“We had a meeting; we are going to achieve some changes regarding the lanes. I cannot announce the specific nature of the change until we are coordinated with the U.S. side.”
The announcement brings a measure of hope to daily cross-border commuters.
While details remain limited, the mayor previously told Fox 5 that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is evaluating potential lane expansions for pre-authorized travelers as part of ongoing efforts to ease congestion at the busiest land border crossing in the world.
When contacted by San Diego Red, a CBP spokesperson confirmed the proposal is under review but emphasized that no final decision has been made.
“CBP is evaluating the feasibility of the proposal. No operational decision has been made at this time,” the spokesperson said.
More details on the changes and their implementation timeline is expected within the next month.
