Pedestrian traffic crossing into the U.S. via the San Ysidro port of entry will be redirected to the El Chaparral port of entry, known as the PedWest project, because the old area is scheduled for demolition.

"The East Wing of the port will be demolished, the part where pedestrians actually cross, all of that will be remodeled to accommodate more pedestrian lanes", said Jason M. Wells, president of the San Ysidro Board of Commerce.

The Board stated that the vehicular lanes won't be affected at all by this remodeling.

For now, pedestrians crossing from the U.S. into Mexico will still be able to use the San Ysidro facilities, but PedWest will overtake that function in a few months as well.

Authorities hope to minimize crossing times while using the newly remodeled pedestrian lanes, reported to sometimes be of up to 3 hours.
