SAN DIEGO.- Border Patrol agents seized drugs valued at nearly $838,000 in various incidents this week at freeway checkpoints, the agency announced.
On Wednesday afternoon at 4:50 p.m., agents detained a 22-year-old man who was driving an Oldsmobile Bravada and woman, 23, traveling with him.
Their vehicle had arrived at I-8 checkpoint near Pine Valley, where agents noticed suspicious compartments and sent it to secondary inspection.
There, a canine team discovered 21 packages of cocaine hidden in the gasoline tank, which had an estimated value of $530,200, and seven bags of methamphetamine, valued at $202,800.
The occupants, both U.S. citizens, were arrested and turned over to DEA agents.
Border Patrol agents made three other seizures of marijuana and methamphetamine from Monday to Wednesday at the I-5 and I-15 checkpoint. Together, the drugs had an estimated value of $104,995.
