How to handle your personal budget is often a challenge. It's even more so for immigrants with scarce knowledge of financial practices in the United States.
A week-long series of free talks and workshops is under way in Spanish to help this community learn them.
The second annual series, called "Semana de Educación Financiera," began Monday morning at the Mexican Consulate in San Diego. The consulate is partnering with National City and the San Diego County Office of Education to present the event countywide.
On Tuesday, there will be talks at the Logan Heights library from 4 to 5 p.m. and at the Bonita-Sunnyside library from 6 to 7 p.m.
The series this year focuses on Latino high school students. At a boot-camp style event, from Wednesday to Friday at Alliant University, they will learn how to be young entrepreneurs and compete for scholarships and prizes.
The series ends with a big fair on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in National City, which will offer workshops on a variety of subjects. These range from how to protect against identity theft, buy a house, save for college and obtain financing to open a business.
All of the talks are given by experts from companies and organizations interested in enhancing immigrants' financial literacy in their adoptive country.
