Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that her government will seek direct contact with Washington following provocative remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested he would immediately launch ground operations against criminal organizations in Mexico.

Trump made the statement during an interview with Fox News, claiming that cartels “have been running the country for a long time.” He did not specify where such operations might take place.

In response, Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico maintains continuous communication with the United States and noted that Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently praised bilateral security coordination.

“Yesterday, I asked Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente to establish direct contact with Secretary Rubio and, if necessary, to speak with President Trump to strengthen coordination,” Sheinbaum said during her morning press conference on Friday.

The Mexican president downplayed the tone of Trump’s comments, characterizing his communication style as direct and dramatic. Her administration, she said, will prioritize formal diplomatic channels over alarm, aiming to ensure continued cooperation and prevent unnecessary escalation between the two nations.
