Six Flags California’s Great America Could Close After 50 Years

The park may close after the 2027 season if its lease isn’t renewed.

Six Flags California’s Great America, the iconic theme park known for its adrenaline-pumping roller coasters and sprawling 112-acre grounds, may permanently close its doors after five decades of entertaining visitors.

When Could the Park Close?

The possible closure was discussed during a recent investors’ meeting, just months after it was announced that Six Flags America in Maryland will also shut down in the fall of this year.

Six Flags Chief Financial Officer Brian Witherow explained that the fate of California’s Great America hinges on whether the company decides to extend the park’s lease.

“Unless we decide to extend, and exercise one of our options to extend that lease, that park’s last year without that extension would be after the ‘27 season,” Witherow stated.

If confirmed, the park would likely close in October 2027, following the end of its Halloween festivities.

According to People magazine, Witherow noted that both the California and Maryland parks “rank very low in terms of margins,” a key factor behind the closures.

In fact, the California park has reportedly been on the company’s radar for some time. Back in 2022, it was revealed that the land had been sold to a Bay Area real estate developer for $310 million, with plans to shut down operations within 11 years.
