The recent dollar – peso currency exchange has not only affected tourism and housing expenses, it has also affected Baja's recent construction works.

Spending for several infrastructure projects has increased due to the higher prices for materials, but among all one main material stands out: cement. Even though Mexico is one of the world's top cement producers, it's indexed in U.S. dollars, explained the head of the Mexican Chamber of the Construction Industry in Tijuana (CMIC), César Romeo Sauceda.

"What the increase on cement represents, it represents at least a 5 to 8% increase on the total construction cost", said Romeo Sauceda to local newspaper Frontera.

The head of the CMIC explained that another factor that forms part of this increase is that there are only two companies that produce cement. In recent months, the price of this material has increased 35%, "a direct impact on construction costs", he said.
