The high cost of rents in Tijuana has severely affected businesses in the city, especially in the tourist area, as the current exchange rate between the dollar and Mexican peso continues to put pressure on the quality of life south of the border.
The tourism vice president of Mexico's Chamber of Commerce, Julián Palomo Saucedo, stated to Uniradio Informa that in spite of the increased tourism in Downtown Tijuana's, rent prices, which are almost always priced in dollars, are too much for many businesses in the are.
"We are talking about 250 to 280 businesses. The businesses inside the "pasajes" have not been accounted for, there's a lot of small businesses, starting from the San Ysidro border, the tourism walkway and arts and crafts market, they all have a lot of closed businesses.", said Palomo.
The vice president recognized that the owner of the establishments are living in the past, with the idea of tourists and dollars flooding the streets local businesses. "The rent agreements need to adapt to the new reality.", he stated.
