These murders are an insanity, and not only in Ciudad Juárez," she said, referring to the border city where hundreds of women have been murdered since 2003.

She said that not enough is being done about this violence. "We are a violent country."

Venegas pauses, and acknowledges that there are Mexicans who are trying to bring about change, particularly in Tijuana, including members of her own family. And that they are working, too, to change the image of the border, expressing pride that they come from there.

The singer has done her part, too, paying tribute to her beloved Tijuana in her songs and in the public comments she makes.

She pauses to ponder her next projects. She has become more and more involved in the production of her discs, she notes.

"I'd like to begin to produce other people," she says. "I don't know if that's in my future or if I will continue to sing.

I suppose that I will continue to sing, but perhaps not in tours that are so, so long."

In San Diego, her concert will feature material from her new disc, "Otra cosa." Much of the sound will be acoustic, but there also will be electric guitars and special-effect accordion. Every musician in her six-member band plays more than one instrument, she says, noting, "They are the group that I always wanted to have … I have a lot of fun."
