In Tijuana, “tacos” are more than a staple, they are part of the city’s identity. For both visitors and locals, it is nearly impossible to navigate the city without stopping at one of the hundreds of taquerías spread across its neighborhoods.
This year, San Diego Red conducted an editorial selection to highlight some of the best carne asada tacos in Tijuana, recognizing taquerías that have earned loyal followings for their flavor, consistency, and reputation. The following establishments were nominated as standouts.
Tacos El Francés
A favorite among both residents and tourists, Tacos El Francés is widely regarded as a cornerstone of Tijuana’s taco culture. For many fans, its tacos rank among the best they have ever tried, drawing visitors who travel long distances specifically to eat here.
The taquería is often described as the “father” of several other taco spots in the city, having influenced generations of taco vendors with its style and preparation.

Tacos El Ruso
One of Tijuana’s most famous taquerías, Tacos El Ruso is known for its menu focused almost entirely on carne asada. Its tacos stand out for their distinctive flavor and oversized portions.
Each order is served on a tray and includes a spoon, a necessity given the generous amount of meat and toppings. Its popularity is such that arriving too late often means missing out entirely, as the taquería frequently sells out.

Tacos El Franc
Recognized both nationally and internationally, Tacos El Franc has become one of the most visited taco spots in the city. Its reputation has grown steadily, earning a feature on Netflix’s Las Crónicas del Taco and a place in the Michelin Guide for the second consecutive year in 2025.
Long lines are common, with dozens of customers waiting during peak hours. The taquería is easily identified by its location near the Costco in Tijuana’s Zona Río area.

Unlike traditional chopped meat tacos, each tortilla is topped with a full piece of grilled steak. Diners can customize their tacos with a range of toppings, from classic options like onion, cilantro, and salsa to less conventional additions such as lettuce, pickled onions, and mayonnaise.
