The resurgence of mining activity in Baja California

According to the Mexican Geological Survey, mining in the state of Baja California presented a generally favorable growth in the production of metallic and non-metallic minerals during the period between 1996 and 2001; this reflected favorably in the state's income. However, since 2001, with the temporary closure of San Felipe S.A de C.V, a dramatic drop was recorded in the state's production of gold and silver, ceasing to be an important state with regard to the production of these metals.



It was not until 2010 that mining picked up in Baja California, when Grupo Mexico (Mexico Group) invested in the mega-project, "El Arco, "this restarted the San Felipe mining project by producing bars of mixed gold and silver through the company "Minera Real de Angeles San Felipe."

The "El Arco" reservoir is located near the town of the same name, South of Ensenada in Baja California within the "Ensenada – Calimali" mining district. In this area, Highway 1 is the only paved road connecting the northern and southern parts of the peninsula. The nearest point to this road is 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of "El Arco."
