The Binational San Diego–Tijuana Race returns on October 26 for its second edition, offering a unique 21-kilometer (13-mile) route that unites two countries through sport.
The half marathon will begin at Las Americas Premium Outlets, continue along Camino de la Plaza, and connect with Dairy Mart Road.
At the 5-kilometer mark, runners will enjoy the scenic views of Parque del Valle del Río Tijuana. By kilometer 10, they’ll experience a once-in-a-lifetime moment—crossing the international border through the San Ysidro–El Chaparral port of entry, along a special lane designated exclusively for the event.
Once in Mexico, the route continues along the international corridor before descending through a five-kilometer stretch known as “La Enchilada,” leading directly to the finish line at the iconic Playas de Tijuana Lighthouse (El Faro).
The half marathon will start at 6:50 a.m., so participants traveling from Tijuana are advised to cross the border early. The 10K race will begin at 7:40 a.m. According to Benjamín Castillo, the race director in Mexico, approximately 3,200 runners are expected to participate.
Safety, Hydration, and Logistics
The event is fully supported by the Municipal Police, particularly the Traffic Division, which has implemented a comprehensive security and traffic control plan in the Playas de Tijuana area.
In coordination with local authorities, Avenida Internacional will be completely closed from Prolongación 22nd Street to the beachfront, ensuring a safe environment for both participants and spectators. Around 800 traffic cones will be deployed to clearly mark lanes for vehicles and pedestrians, with two circulation lanes remaining open to maintain order throughout the event.
Hydration and medical support will be available at three key points along the route, each staffed with an ambulance:
- Kilometer 3: In front of CES, on Avenida Internacional
- Kilometer 6: Along Avenida Internacional, heading toward Prolongación Calle 2ª
- Kilometer 9: At the entrance to Playas, near the pedestrian bridge by the first traffic light
An additional medical station and ambulance will be stationed at the finish line for emergencies. Paramedics, police officers, and volunteers will ensure runners’ safety throughout the course.
One of the race’s most memorable moments occurs as runners cross into Mexico, where they’ll be greeted by a live mariachi band, local food and coffee stands, and seafood tastings, along with festive music and family activities that create a lively binational atmosphere.
Border Crossing and Documentation
Foreign and binational runners must present their documentation as usual to enter Mexico legally. U.S. authorities will have the runners’ information on record, making the process faster and safer. However, event organizers recommend not carrying backpacks or large bags, as these could delay inspection by a minute or more.
Instead, participants are encouraged to carry a waist pouch or small belt bag with essential documents only.
