The third Global Wave Conference in Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico, took place this year on May 6th, 7th and 8th. The promoters of this event are WildCoast and Surf Rider Foundation, both whom are international organizations that protect coastal areas and waves.

At the event there were speakers from various countries like the United States, Canary Islands, Peru, Costa Rica and Mexico among others, who all shared their ideas and point of view concerning the care that must be taken in coastal areas to keep in good condition a resource as important as the waves.

Among all of the most important topics and workshops were those that had to do with protecting the environment like the conservation of coastal and marine resources, protection of the rights to access beaches, Surf reserves, the income that is generated from the sport of surfing, and proclaiming the waves as part of world heritage. The hope out of all of this is for the governments to protect the waves properly by regulating anything which may affect it.

The surf school in Rosarito Beach "SurLocales Mx", which is run by Carlos Luna, had a prominent participation in this important conference, by exposing that since 2007 it has promoted the surf culture in the region through activities aimed at the conservation of the beaches among the people who come and practice this sport. Luna said that surfing is a sport that promotes values like family integration, friendship and respect for nature. He also pointed out that it is important to spread these types of activities so that people can practice this sport, and enjoy the waves and become the environments agents for change.

The speakers highlighted the good work of institutions and civil society organizations in Mexico like Pronatura, Costa Salvaje reserva del Vizcaino, Costa Salvaje Barra de la Cruz Oaxaca, SurfEns and the Rosarito surf school SurfLocales.MX. However, they regretted the fact that governments have not implemented policies to defend and preserve these waves, but instead have allowed real estate development without clear regulations aimed at protecting coastal areas, and ensure that they can be used by those who acquire a property right to the beach and by the residents and visitors of the region.

After the conference, the participants aimed to establish a declaration that protects all the necessary and important points for the development of the life in coastal areas, mainly the protection of waves, as it lacks true international legal frameworks that safeguard it.

On the last day of activities the speakers will visit the San Miguel Beach in the municipality of Ensenada, to look at a project of a state park in this area that will ensure that it is preserved as a protected area.
