Several studies coincide that stress can have negative effects on health of the person facing it.

Nevertheless, a recent investigation showed how this condition can be the cause of brain shrinkage and with even more severe consequences to the memory.

The study published by the magazine Neurology, determined that people that present a high level of cortisol, the stress hormone, also have problems with memory and have experimented a significant reduction in the size of their brains.

The Med School researchers in Harvard University, assessed around 20 thousand people with the sole purpose of verifying the association of cortisol in the blood with the cognitive performance and the structural integrity of the brain of young and middle-aged adults with no dementia.

For them, they conducted blood tests and MRI diagnoses. They divided the group in three depending on their cortisol levels: low, medium and high, to then conduct cognitive and memory tests.

Those who got the lowest rating in the memory cognitive tests, abstract reasoning, visual perception, attention and overall body function, belonged to the group with the higher cortisol levels.

Therefore, scientists came to the conclusion that stress affects memory and visual perception, as well as the smaller brain volumes, in other words more stress less memory.
