Tijuana Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz inaugurated a new “Sendero Seguro” (Safe Path) at the Tijuana Institute of Technology’s Tomás Aquino campus, a project designed to improve safety and mobility for students and nearby residents.

“I’m very pleased because today we’re activating a critical Safe Path in an area where thousands of students converge every day. From now on, they’ll have a renewed, well-lit, and secure route for their commutes,” the mayor said.

Burgueño Ruiz noted that the project aligns with a broader national effort led by President Claudia Sheinbaum to improve lighting and security in high-risk areas.

The project was funded with 4.1 million pesos — roughly $240,000 USD. Virginia Vargas González, Secretary of Territorial and Urban Development, said the installation will provide a safer, better-lit corridor for thousands of daily users.

The new pathway stretches about 2,875 feet (876 meters) and includes 73 bollard lights. City officials estimate it will benefit more than 6,000 students and about 8,000 residents in the Otay Centenario area.

José Guillermo Cárdenas López, director of the Tijuana Institute of Technology, thanked the mayor for delivering the Safe Path, while student representative Emersón José Martínez Santos said the improved corridor will allow students to reach campus exits and public transportation more safely.

The Safe Path program is part of the city’s 2025–2027 Development Plan, which focuses on modern infrastructure, reliable public services, and safer urban spaces.

Also attending the inauguration were Municipal Public Services Director Josué Gutiérrez Márquez, Councilwoman Magaly Ronquillo Palacios, Otay Centenario Delegate Claudia Casas Valdés, and campus officials and students.tter-illuminated corridor for thousands of daily users.
