Congressman Gilberto Herrera Solórzano has revealed plans for a cable car system that will provide Tijuana residents with a modern aerial transit alternative.

The Cablebús project was formally announced while emphasizing the city’s need for accessible, high-quality public infrastructure that meets people’s needs and is accessible to everyone.

While specific details regarding the project’s timeline and funding remain undisclosed, the announcement validates earlier commitments from Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, who had repeatedly promised to make the cable transit system a reality for the border city.

Preliminary plans indicate the initial route will connect the Otay district, specifically the area surrounding Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC), with the Camino Verde neighborhood in the Sánchez Taboada delegation.

The cable car concept gained political traction as part of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s transportation initiatives during her electoral campaign. Governor Marina del Pilar has maintained that her administration would continue working to implement the federal proposal at the local level.

According to projections from the Institute for Sustainable Mobility (IMOS), the system is designed to accommodate up to 70,000 commuters daily. This substantial capacity is expected to significantly reduce congestion along some of Tijuana’s most traffic-plagued roads.
