TIJUANA – The city's beach community will host a summer festival Saturday and Sunday featuring a surfing competition, 30 bands and a seafood festival.

Thousands from both sides of the border are expected to turn out for the third annual "Tijuana en la playa" festival on the west side. The beach community offers many popular water sports, such as kayaking, surfing and body boarding. The weekend surfing competition features a prize of $6,000.

There will also be a skateboarding competition and motorcycle acrobatic exhibition.

An art exhibit, live music provided by 30 bands and a bikini contest are also part of the beach show.

The Seafood and Fish Festival, organized by a local restaurant organization, will be held at the same time so visitors can sample favorite dishes and beverages.

The free festival is held at the Playas boardwalk starting at noon each day. The surfing competition gets under way earlier, depending on the waves.

Playas de Tijuana is 7.5 miles southwest of the San Ysidro border crossing. Here are directions to get there:

After crossing the border, follow the route that's marked "avenida Internacional." Travel on the avenue until reaching the intersection marked "Playas de Tijuana," and follow that route. Once in the beach community, go around the bull ring and that's where the boardwalk – and festival – begins.

Just like in San Diego, public parking is limited to a few public lots and some residential spots, so car-pooling is encouraged.
