Ahead of New Year’s celebrations, Tijuana’s Department of Citizen Security and Protection (SSPCM) is urging residents to celebrate safely and responsibly, with the goal of preventing accidents and reducing risks so families can welcome the new year in peace.
Authorities strongly recommend avoiding the use of fireworks, which can cause burns, amputations, fires, and hearing damage, particularly among children. As safer alternatives, officials suggest LED light displays, cold lights, or glow sticks, always under adult supervision. In the event of any burn or injury, immediate medical attention should be sought.
The SSPCM also emphasized the importance of protecting pets during holiday festivities. Fireworks can cause severe stress and nervous disturbances in domestic animals. To keep pets safe, residents are advised to keep them indoors or in quiet rooms, avoid leaving them on rooftops, open patios, or chained outside, and consider playing soft music or using calming methods recommended by specialists.
Authorities further reminded the public that firing guns into the air is a criminal offense and poses a serious danger, as falling bullets can cause severe injuries or even death. Residents are encouraged to report this practice and avoid any actions that could endanger others. Celebrations, officials stressed, should never involve the use of firearms.
Finally, the SSPCM reiterated the importance of consuming alcohol in moderation during New Year’s celebrations and avoiding driving after drinking. Safer alternatives include using a designated driver, taxis or ride-hailing services, or arranging transportation with a family member or friend.
