As one of the most anticipated urban mobility projects in recent years, the Tijuana Elevated Viaduct is expected to dramatically reduce travel times and alleviate chronic traffic congestion for thousands of daily commuters, particularly those traveling between Tijuana International Airport and the coastal area of Playas de Tijuana.

Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar confirmed that the tunnel segment is now complete and that final work is focused on systems installation and pavement laying. The entire viaduct is expected to be operational by the end of 2025 or beginning of 2026.

Originally planned as a 10.5-kilometer elevated highway and tunnel system running from Airport Boulevard to the entrance of Playas de Tijuana, the route was modified during construction due to geographical challenges. The viaduct will now conclude at Cañón del Matadero, shortening the total length by roughly 1.5 kilometers. On- and off-ramps are currently being built near Mirador and La Isla neighborhood.

Crews are now installing essential operational systems including ventilation, lighting, and telemetry infrastructure to ensure safety within the tunnel section. Once operational, the viaduct is projected to cut commute times between the airport and Cañón del Matadero by up to 12 minutes.
