Tijuana Holds Its “Mini Olympics” For Schoolchildren

With the purpose of promoting physical activity among the children and teenagers of the City's Educational System (SEM), Mayor Jorge Astiazarán alongside Tijuana's Municipal Institute of Sports (IMDET) inaugurated today the 2015 Mini-Olympics, which will have approximately 1,500 athletes.



During the event, which took place at Unidad Deportiva CREA, Mayor Astiazarán mentioned that these Mini-Olympics are meant to be stimulating for the student's comprehensive education, in order for them to develop brilliant minds, healthy bodies and a competitive spirit.

"This is a great way to promote physical activity; these competitions will give them the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities regarding respect, harmony and joy, given that our main goal is for all of us to bond with one another," mentioned the Mayor.



On his behalf, IMDET's director, Komar Rivera Fernández, said that for the first time SEM will have a specialized competition system, so that children as wells teenagers have the opportunity of developing their talent year after year.



Disciplines included in these competitions were track and field, basketball, handball, ball matches, soccer, volleyball and chess, all events will take place on June 17, 18 and 19 at CREA and El Dorado facilities.
