Acclaimed writer Don Miguel Ruiz, best-selling author of The Four Agreements, has been formally incorporated into the Tijuana Historical Mural, a sprawling artistic project inspired by the city itself.

The mural, a passion project of cultural promoter José Aguirre Lomelí, aims to recognize the multitude of individuals who have shaped the city’s development.

Currently housed in Lomelí’s private residence, the mural was born from a desire to give back to the city that has served as his repeated muse. The concept took root after Lomelí drew inspiration from a famous mural by Diego Rivera that depicts Mexican life, envisioning a similar tribute dedicated solely to Tijuana.

“Tijuana is a land of great effort, hard work, constant improvement, and immense creativity. That motivated us to portray what the life of Tijuana truly is, from a historical point of view, but above all, from an artistic one,” he said.

During a recent visit to Lomelí’s home, Ruiz was presented with his inclusion in the monumental work. The Tijuana-native author is celebrated for influential books including The Four Agreements, The Toltec Art of Life and Death and Eros: A Return to Unconditional Love.

The mural now features the faces of nearly one thousand local figures from diverse fields such as journalism, sports, and academia. Lomelí emphasized that he has never charged anyone to appear in the work.

Personalities are chosen based on their recognition by Tijuana society. This scale is a significant expansion from the project’s initial plan to feature just 25 figures.

While the public eagerly awaits its debut, plans for a full exhibition are underway. The mural is designed on a movable canvas, and potential venues under consideration include the Old Municipal Palace or the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT).

The exhibition will offer free admission to all, with the goal of strengthening community ties and sense of belonging by connecting Tijuana residents with their local history.

“Afterwards, we want it to be a teaching aid for the teachers of Tijuana, from preschool to university. It will help students learn about our history, because what is not known is not loved,” he said.
