Tijuana Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz was honored with the Gold Level Award at the 2025 Tianguis Turístico (Tourism Tianguis)—an important recognition awarded by Mexico’s Tourism Secretariat to destinations and tourism service providers that uphold the highest standards of excellence.
Mayor Burgueño remarked that the purpose of this distinction is to promote quality service, social responsibility, sustainability, and ongoing improvement across the tourism sector. The ultimate goal, he said, is to ensure full visitor satisfaction, encourage repeat visits, and broaden international and domestic markets.
He further noted that the recognition stems from a rigorous assessment in which Baja California became the first state in the country to receive this quality distinction across all its municipalities.

The mayor also celebrated the resounding success of the Tourism Tianguis in Tijuana, with hotels reporting 100% occupancy and business meetings at Baja California Center helping to drive regional economic growth.
“The Tourism Tianguis strengthens Tijuana’s economy beyond its daily activities. We’re living a historic moment, one we proudly share with the local Chambers of Commerce and everyone who helped make it happen. We’ve worked hand in hand with the governor, Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, to make this wonderful event possible,” said the mayor.

On the third day of the event, Mayor Burgueño toured the exhibition booths representing various Mexican states, showcasing the country’s rich tourism offerings—from its cuisine and crafts to its diverse travel destinations.
As part of the binational programming, Tijuana’s Secretary of Economic Development, Pedro Montejo Peterson, welcomed visitors from Mexico and abroad, highlighting the multiple attractions of this border city.
Mayor Burgueño also extended an invitation to the Gran Taco de México (Great Mexican Taco) event, set to take place on Thursday, May 1, at the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT), and feature tacos from every state.
